The Story
In 1989, Lorena Bobbitt married John Wayne Bobbitt. According to Lorena's testimony during later court proceedings, the marriage became abusive, with allegations of repeated physical violence, sexual assault, and controlling behavior. Several witnesses also testified about signs of abuse they observed over the years.

Lorena said that on the night of June 23, 1993, John returned home and raped her. In the hours that followed, she picked up a kitchen knife while he was asleep and severed his penis before leaving the house in a state of shock.
She drove away with it before throwing it into a nearby field. Shortly afterward, she contacted the police herself. Authorities later recovered the severed organ, and surgeons successfully reattached it during a nine-hour operation. John survived.

The incident quickly became one of the most talked-about criminal cases in America.
However, the courtroom told a more complex story than the headlines.
John Wayne Bobbitt was tried on charges of marital sexual assault but was acquitted. Lorena Bobbitt was charged with malicious wounding. Her defense argued that years of alleged abuse and trauma had caused her to suffer a temporary mental breakdown at the time of the incident.

The jury found Lorena not guilty by reason of temporary insanity, and she was ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment instead of serving a prison sentence. She was released after 45 days.
Years later, Lorena, now known as Lorena Gallo, became an advocate for survivors of domestic violence, using her experience to raise awareness and support victims seeking help.
Although the incident became the subject of jokes and media satire for years, many observers have argued that the public often overlooked the allegations of abuse that formed the backdrop to the case.
